Robert, 76, was enjoying his retirement. An active golfer, he had just finished building his dream house near a golf course, and was looking forward to travelling there frequently. Socially well-integrated, he was in good health, having even completed a tandem skydive with his grandchildren. Sleep problems had plagued him for years, and he had just found a complementary approach that worked and kept him from using medication.
Robert contracted Covid just after his third vaccination, and appeared to recover from flu-like symptoms within a few weeks. However, a stinging sensation in his forehead appeared, that felt like ‘an ice pick lodged in my skull’. His energy levels did not recover, as he experienced constant fatigue and the need to rest all day. Playing golf was like a distant dream, and travelling completely out of the question. Secondary mental health effects developed, such as anxieties and self-deprecating thoughts. His sleep problems resurfaced, and he felt like a shadow of his former self, for months with no hope of improvement. In addition, his wife developed a treatable cancer and was beginning to undergo chemotherapy.
Medications appeared to sap his energy even further, and he did not like their side effects. Robert tried various complementary therapies, with no success. At this point he looked into neurofeedback, and began doing two sessions per week, at his home. A brain map indicated multiple neuromarkers for his various issues. Robert enjoyed watching his old favourite movies, as well as some newer series. The first session had a significant impact – ‘I feel really good about myself’. Sleep improved within the first week, as he experienced rest and recuperation in depths that he had not felt for a long time. Filled with hope, his motivation improved, and Robert felt better equipped to offer emotional support to his wife. Intrusive thoughts became rare, and the acute pain in his forehead was attenuated to the point that it was no longer a distraction. He was able to make longer phone calls with friends and family, and after a month felt able to meet people again in person.
After fifteen neurofeedback sessions (each two hours), Robert was active again and able to travel to his home abroad, taking part in social events and playing golf.
